Russian juniors dominate the women’s competition

Russia celebrated a double win at the inaugural FIG Junior Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Győr, Hungary. Viktoriia Listunova won the very first all-around women’s individual title and the Listunova, Vladislava Urazova, Elena Gerasimova trio can celebrate the team gold medal.

Russia took over the lead from the United States in subdivision two: Viktoriia Listunova recorded 55.323 points, making history as the first Junior Worlds women’s all-around gold medallist. Following her is her teammate, Vladislava Urazova, who took the silver medal with a 55.298 points total, and the bronze medal went Ou Yushan of China, who pipped American Kayla di Cello for the bronze in the last subdivision (54.931).

“This is unbelievable, I cannot really grasp that I’m leaving Hungary with two gold medals! I am overjoyed with my all-around win just as we all are with the team gold. Of course we are always monitoring the results of our rivals, and I have to say I was a little bit surprised that China took the silver medal in front of the United States. We have worked really, really hard for these wins” Viktoriia Listunova told in the mixed zone.

There was quite a battle for the team medals: Belgium snatched the third spot from Great Britain, then Romania climbed up third, but in the last subdivision China, Japan and Brazil were yet to come. That promised a very tight race for the medals, and team China had the last laugh: propelled by Ou Yushan’s performance they pushed up to silver medal, dropping the United States to bronze position – and Romania slipped down from the podium.
